2027: Tinubu hosts ex-PDP govs at Aso Rock
President Bola Tinubu held a significant meeting on Saturday evening with influential members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, signaling an early maneuver toward political realignment in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
The gathering was spearheaded by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, alongside his close associates, notably former officials from the G5 Governors faction. This group diverged from the PDP leadership during the last election cycle, notably opposing the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and subsequently endorsing Tinubu, then the candidate for the All Progressives Congress.
Following the elections, Wike transitioned into his role as the Minister of FCT, appointed by Tinubu in August 2023. The meeting also included former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, along with former governors Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, both of whom were part of the defunct G5.
While the exact details of their discussions remain private, insiders indicate the primary focus was on exploring potential avenues for collaboration and integrating these former governors into the present political landscape.
