2 labourers sentenced to 1 month imprisonment each for stealing iron rods

Two labourers have been sentenced to one month imprisonment each over theft of iron rods.

He was sentenced by an Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Tuesday.

20 year old Marvelous Samuel and 23 year old Micheal Amalam have been charged by the police with theft and joint act .

Malam Sani Umar, who presided over the matte sentenced the duo.

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charge and persuaded the judge for leniency.

The judge has granted the convicts an option to make a payment of N5,000 fine for each offence or risk 1 month imprisonment each.

“I have considered the fact that they are first time offenders, they have shown remorse for the crime committed and the iron rods have been restored back to the owner,” he ruled.

The court established that the judgment would serve as lesson to those who who would want to involve themselves in such acts.

The court also sent message of warning to the convicts to stay away from crimes.

Mr Abdullahi Tanko, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, earlier informed the court that the complainant, Engr. Williams Odey of Mshel Homes Ltd. Abuja brought the matter to Iddo police station on Oct.16.

Tanko narrated that the convicts who work in Mshel estate on the same day illegally took away iron rods inside the estate and took the rods through the fence.

He further said that one Sunday Nanishal, the security guard supervising the estate arreste  them while carrying out the act and the stolen items were taken from them.

He revealed that the offence was in contravention of the provision of Sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.
