Yuletide: Kwara Police ban fireworks sale, usage over security concerns
In preparation for the new Christmas and New Year celebration, the Kwara State Police Command has placed strict enforcement of the ban on the sale, use, and distribution of fireworks, citing heightened security concerns across the state.
This is coming barely two days after Kwara State House of Assembly urged the government to outlaw the use of fireworks and “knockouts” during festive periods, warning that their explosive sounds often hamper security responses and create panic among residents.
In a statement made available to The PUNCH on Thursday, the Command spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said the Command has intensified security surveillance and deployed personnel to strategic locations, including markets, worship centres, motor parks and major public spaces across the state.
“The ban on fireworks became necessary because criminals often exploit the loud explosions to mask their activities, stressing that anyone caught violating the order would be arrested and prosecuted.
“The use, sale, and distribution of fireworks, bangers, and other explosive devices remain strictly prohibited. These items can cause panic, trigger false alarms, and serve as a cover for criminal activities,” he said.
The PPRO further stated that joint patrols and intelligence-sharing operations were ongoing across communities to deter crime during the festive season.
The Command also reiterated that the restriction of motorcycles and tricycles between 9 pm and 6 am remains fully in force.
“The restriction on motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke Napep) between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. remains in full effect.
“This regulation continues to play a crucial role in reducing night-time crimes and enhancing community safety,” he said.
Residents were advised to remain calm and comply with the safety directives, while the police assured them of their commitment to maintaining peace throughout the festivities and beyond.
“For emergencies and reports of suspicious activities, the public can contact the Kwara Police Control Room on 08125275046 or 0703206950,” the statement concluded.
