Why I opppsed Atiku in 2023 presidential election – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed the underlying reasons for his strong opposition to Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition during the 2023 election cycle. Contrary to claims that his stance stemmed from not being chosen as Atiku’s running mate, Wike emphasized that his decision was rooted in principle.

Wike has been an advocate for power rotation and stated he could not accept a scenario where, following eight years of Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency, power would revert to the North again. “It is not about whether you chose to field me or not; it’s about principle. Taking that decision was difficult, and I had to assess the situation. Atiku was not an option, so he is a no-go area,” Wike explained.

When asked if Atiku’s decision to choose someone else as a running mate had changed his view, Wike clarified that Atiku never officially dropped him, as he was initially selected. Instead, he reiterated that his opposition was primarily due to a lack of trust and integrity in Atiku’s political dealings.

Wike recounted past experiences, asserting, “From day one, I informed my delegates that one thing you must know is that Atiku does not keep to his words.” He shared insights into a political encounter in 2019 involving Atiku, Bukola Saraki, and Uche Secondus, where he felt misled regarding his role in the cabinet if they succeeded in the elections.

“I knew from the start that Atiku would never keep his word, and I never relied on it,” Wike stated, reinforcing his belief in the need for trustworthy leadership.
