Trump moves to close US 30 embassies and consulates worldwide

The Trump administration is planning to close approximately 30 embassies and consulates globally, including several in Africa, as reported by CNN. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to streamline the United States’ diplomatic presence abroad, according to an internal document from the State Department.

The proposed closures include embassies in the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Lesotho, and South Sudan, alongside a consulate in South Africa. The document reveals plans to shut down 10 embassies and 17 consulates, predominantly affecting diplomatic missions in Europe and Africa, while also targeting locations in Asia and the Caribbean.

Specific embassies identified for closure include those in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan. The list of consulates at risk features five in France, two in Germany, two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as one each in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and South Korea.

Additionally, the internal memo suggests a reduction of the US diplomatic presence in vital regions such as Somalia and Iraq, which are crucial to America’s counterterrorism efforts. Currently, there has been no official confirmation of approval from Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding this proposal, and a spokesperson for the State Department has refrained from commenting on the leaked information.
