Traditionalists barred from Awujale’s funeral as Ijebuland bids farewell to Oba Adetona
Soldiers on Monday prevented traditionalists, believed to be members of the Osugbo cult, from disrupting the Muslim funeral of the late Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona. The presence of these traditionalists raised concerns among attendees, prompting onlookers to shout at them, while soldiers took control, escorting the individuals from the royal father’s residence.
The remains of Oba Adetona were laid to rest at his private residence in Ijebu Ode around 6 pm, in accordance with Islamic rites. His burial followed the rejection by traditionalists of the Oba and Chiefs Law of 2021, which permits traditional rulers to be interred according to their personal faiths. The Osugbo cult sought to assert their influence over the burial, given that Oba Adetona was pivotal in amending the law.
Oba Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after a remarkable 65-year reign, was interred alongside his late father in a family mausoleum that also includes his mother. The burial was attended by numerous dignitaries, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governors Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other notable figures.
Governor Abiodun spoke highly of the late monarch, stating, “The reign of Oba Adetona was not only marked by longevity but by his towering wisdom, deep influence, enduring legacy of generosity, selflessness, progress, and uncommon peace.” He reflected on the impact of the Oba’s leadership, asserting, “Kabiyesi was a bundle of intellect… His legacy of selfless service and love for the people will continue to guide future generations.”
Aliko Dangote also praised the late Awujale for his devotion to the people of Nigeria, noting his significant contributions to national development. Similarly, Sunny Kuku, the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu land, described the late monarch as a man of integrity and wisdom who used his position to uplift the community.
Political figures like Ladi Adebutu and former Governor Gbenga Daniel echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Oba Adetona’s unique leadership traits and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people. They urged Nigerians to adopt his qualities of dedication and service.
