TICAD9: Tinubu calls for renewed commitment to peace, stability in Japan

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their significant achievements in the fight against insurgency and criminality, while urging a fresh approach to international partnerships at the 9th Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD9).

During his address at the plenary session on Peace and Stability, Tinubu emphasized the need for addressing the root causes of insecurity through economic reforms and the enhancement of Nigeria’s security forces. He stated, “Nigeria’s brave armed forces can win any number of battles, but we do justice to their heroism only when we, as a government, are courageous in tackling not just terror, but also the underlying causes.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, released a statement outlining Tinubu’s recognition of Nigeria’s strengths in inclusivity, diversity, and the rule of law. He noted that the current momentum within the Armed Forces serves as a crucial foundation for national development and stability.

Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba, opened the session by highlighting the importance of mutual understanding and collaborative actions for the advancement of Africa. He announced a new economic framework that will enable Japan and the African Development Bank to allocate up to $5.5 billion for projects aimed at fostering private sector-led growth on the continent.

President Tinubu concluded his remarks by reaffirming that peace and stability are vital for meaningful development. He expressed concern about ongoing conflicts in several African nations, calling for sustained investment in infrastructure and cooperation with civil society and international partners to improve the living standards of all Nigerians.
