Taiwo Awoniyi the hero as Union Berlin clinch Europa league ticket
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi was the hero as he netted a brace to help Union Berlin secure a place in next season UEFA Europa league.
The match played on Saturday saw FC Union Berlin securing a thrilling 3-2 home victory over Bochum at the Alte Foersterei in the German Bundes liga season finale.
Going into the game, Awoniyi’s side needed a win to stand a chance of overtaking Freiburg and claim the Europa League spot and they showed determination by grabbing a two-nil lead within the opening 25 minutes
Grischa Proemel gave the Iron Ones the lead after just five minutes, and Awoniyi converted from the penalty spot twenty minutes later to get the hosts cruising with his 14th league goal of the season.
Meanwhile, goals from Simon Zoller and Eduard Loewen after the break drew Bochum level but sent Urs Fischer’s men back down to sixth on the league table, even with Freiburg losing at Bayer Leverkusen.
Awoniyi was the hero as he scored a late winner in the 88th minute to send the home fans into weird jubilation, taking his goal tally to 15th.
Ironically Awoniyi scored Union Berlin’s first goal of the season in their 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the same stadium and also scored their last goal against Bochum.
Meanwhile, the Kwara-born Striker’s name was missing as Coach Salisu Yusuf announced a 30- man list for the friendly for Mexico and Ecuador.
