Suspend Senator Natasha replaced by Aniekan Bassey as Diaspora committee chair
In a significant development, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appointed Senator Aniekan Bassey as the new chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations.
This announcement was made during Thursday’s plenary session, effectively replacing the suspended senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The leadership change comes in the context of ongoing uncertainties surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s tenure.
Notably, in a minor reshuffle earlier this year, she was removed from her previous role as chair of the Senate Committee on Local Content and reassigned to the Diaspora and NGOs Committee.
While Senator Akpabio did not provide a detailed explanation for the recent replacement, sources suggest it may be connected to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension.
Earlier, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court mandated her reinstatement, stipulating an apology to the Senate for her conduct. However, the Senate stated it has yet to receive a certified true copy of the court’s decision, and to date, Natasha has not submitted her apology.
