Stray bullet kills secondary school student on way to writing exam in Ibadan
A tragic incident in Ibadan saw a teenage boy lose his life to a stray bullet while heading to school on Tuesday. Eyewitnesses reported that the shooting occurred at the Ibadan airport junction along Old Ife Road.
Dauda Oseni, a commercial motorcyclist who witnessed the event, shared that the boy was traveling in his father’s car with his twin brother to sit for his final WAEC examinations when they were caught in the crossfire. “A team of police officers, while pursuing suspected Yahoo boys, fired gunshots which mistakenly hit the teenager who was inside his father’s car,” Oseni explained.
The heartbreaking moment unfolded as the boy’s twin brother raised an alarm after realizing his sibling had been shot, prompting their father to stop the vehicle. Despite onlookers rushing to help, the boy was declared dead at the scene.
An anonymous vulcaniser who also witnessed the aftermath noted that the boy, still in his school uniform, was taken to Welfare Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
In the wake of this tragedy, a public outcry ensued, with protesters carrying the deceased’s body to the State Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, seeking an audience with Governor Seyi Makinde. They were received by Mr. Sunday Odukoya, the governor’s Executive Assistant on Security, who assured them that the government would investigate the matter.
As the news developed, attempts to contact the Oyo State Police Command’s spokesperson for comments had gone unanswered at the time of publication.
