Property damaged as power surge causes Fire at Kwara plaza
The Kwara State Fire Service successfully thwarted a potential disaster on Saturday, saving nine units of two-bedroom flats and ten shops during a fire outbreak in Ganmo, a district within the Ifelodun Local Government Area.
The fire erupted early in the morning at God First Plaza, situated opposite the Transmission Company of Nigeria along Ogbondoroko Road.
According to officials, the blaze was sparked by a power surge from one of the flats, which was further fueled by combustible materials, including mattresses and wooden planks stored inside.
Remarkably, no casualties were reported as a result of the incident. The prompt action of the fire service crew played a vital role in containing the flames and preventing them from spreading to nearby shops, which included several cosmetics outlets.
Hassan Adekunle, Principal Fire Officer and Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, provided details on the incident, stating, “On Saturday, 21st June 2025, at about 06:20 hours, we received a distress call about a fire outbreak at God First Plaza. Our crew arrived at the scene quickly to find the building engulfed in flames.”
He praised the firemen’s efforts, adding, “Undeterred, our team immediately swung into action, demonstrating exceptional professionalism and expertise. Their swift intervention effectively curtailed the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent structures.”
During the firefighting operation, a loud explosion from shattering glass startled nearby residents, prompting them to evacuate. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the occupants or the fire personnel.
“Our dedicated firefighters worked tirelessly, ensuring that only one flat was affected by the outbreak,” Adekunle explained. “Preliminary investigations indicated that a power surge caused the fire, with the presence of combustible materials in the affected flat significantly contributing to its rapid spread.”
In light of the fire, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, expressed his sympathy for those affected by the blaze. He urged the public to adhere strictly to fire safety guidelines, stating, “It is essential for everyone to be vigilant and proactive in taking necessary precautions to ensure safety in their homes and businesses.”
