Primary teachers shut schools In Enugu, over minimum wage

Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, in Enugu state has declared an industrial action.

The industrial action has put on hold the activities of public primary schools in the state.

The union reportedly gave the directive of the indefinite industrial action with effect from May 9, in a circular: No. 001/05/2022, signed by the state Chairman, Theophilus Nweke, and Secretary, Macs Nnaji.

The industrial action was a protest against the non implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage by the state government in primary schools.

The concerned teachers have reportedly complied totally with the directive of the union as all the public primary schools in Enugu metropolis were reportedly under lock and key.

While reacting, the Commissioner for Education, Prof Uche Eze, said the state government was already working on the implementation of new wage for the primary school teachers.
