Poverty, illiteracy key drivers of Boko Haram insurgency, says Yobe gov
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has pinpointed poverty and illiteracy as significant factors fueling the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East.
During a recent courtesy visit from participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 18 at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Governor Buni, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, stressed the importance of addressing these root causes to effectively combat insurgency in the region.
“Illiteracy and poverty have played a significant role in the re-emergence of Boko Haram. It is very important that we continue to work on these issues,” he stated.
The governor underscored the need for sustainable peace, asserting that it could only be achieved by tackling underlying social and economic challenges. He cautioned that neglecting these factors would further prolong insecurity in the area.
In response to these challenges, Governor Buni reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and enhancing education. This includes economic empowerment programs, the rehabilitation of schools, and the recruitment of qualified teachers.
Earlier, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Yar’adua, the leader of the NISS delegation, described their study tour as a means to assess Yobe’s security situation and identify best practices that could influence national security policy. He mentioned that insights from this visit would contribute to a comprehensive report guiding future decisions on security management.
