Police make 1,950 arrests, EFCC secures 588 convictions in August – NOA
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has revealed that throughout August 2025, the Nigeria Police Force made a remarkable 1,950 arrests and successfully rescued 141 victims from various crimes.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also shone a light on its achievements by securing 588 convictions and recovering a total of N21.06 billion.
During the second monthly Joint Press Security Briefing, NOA Director General Lanre Issa-Onilu shared these noteworthy results, underscoring the collective efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies in addressing crime and ensuring public safety.
Issa-Onilu noted that compared to July, when the police neutralized 78 terrorists and rescued 175 kidnap victims across 326 operations, the progress made in August is commendable.
He highlighted that the Nigerian Army executed 261 operations, while the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized a staggering 66,255.81 kg of narcotics.
In his presentation, the DG provided a detailed breakdown of police operations nationwide, stating, “Our efforts resulted in the dismantling of 37 criminal gangs, neutralizing 18 terrorists, and a total of 210 operations conducted in August.” He also regrettably acknowledged the loss of 17 police personnel and 42 civilian lives amidst ongoing conflict.
The Nigerian Army played a crucial role as well, repelling an ambush by the Islamic State West Africa Province and neutralizing 30 terrorists in a series of air-ground strikes in Zamfara, which led to the surrender of 76 individuals, including women and children.
In the fight against corruption, the EFCC’s results were striking with 1,293 cases investigated, leading to 588 convictions and the recovery of substantial amounts in foreign and local currencies.
The NDLEA reported 944 arrests, which included major operations against two drug kingpins, resulting in the seizure of drugs, firearms, and over N26 million in illicit proceeds.
Issa-Onilu concluded the briefing by stating, “These results reflect positive outcomes from tighter inter-agency coordination, stronger intelligence-led actions, and expanded public-facing communication to counter misinformation,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to keeping Nigeria safe and secure.
