Police intercept cannabis hidden in yams, arrest kidnappers in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has intercepted a large consignment of cannabis concealed under tubers of yam and arrested suspected kidnappers in a major security breakthrough.

The operation, carried out on September 26, 2025, around 4:00 p.m. along the Babanla–Oreke–Oke-Ode axis, was a joint effort of the police, operatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), and local vigilantes.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the team intercepted a vehicle loaded with yams but discovered 127 bags of substances suspected to be cannabis hidden underneath.

Two suspects, identified as Dan-Teni Haruna and Rabiu Ibrahim, both from Saliku in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, were arrested in connection with the drug trafficking.

In a related development, security operatives also arrested Mohammed Abubakar, Hussain, and Tukur Ibrahim, a notorious kidnapper allegedly linked to the August 8, 2025, invasion of Babanla community. The police said discreet investigations are ongoing, after which the suspects will be arraigned in court.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, commended the security team for the successful operation and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Kwara State.

“Kwara will not be a safe haven for criminal elements,” CP Ojo warned, urging residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely information.
