Police denies claim of IGP ordering attacks on officers during stop-and-search
The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral fake news story claiming that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, directed citizens to attack or throw stones at officers who request to search their phones.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described the claim as completely false and baseless.
According to the statement, the IGP has never issued such an order and does not condone any form of violence against law enforcement personnel.
Instead, the IGP has urged citizens to report cases of police misconduct through established channels.
The police emphasised that the proper way to address concerns is by following due process and maintaining respect for the rule of law, not through acts of violence.
To facilitate complaints, the police provided helplines and contact details:
- Phone: +2347056792065, +2349133333785, +2349133333786
- Social media: @PoliceNG on X (formerly Twitter), @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram
- Email: pressforabuja@police.gov.ng
- Website: www.npf.gov.ng
The police also urged the public to be cautious of misinformation and to verify information from credible sources before sharing.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to fostering trust and cooperation between officers and the communities they serve,” the statement concluded.
