Peace talks with bandits yield result as 28 abductees regain freedom in Katsina

Peace efforts in Katsina State have recorded a breakthrough as 28 abducted persons were released by a notorious bandit leader, Isya Akwashi Garwa, in Faskari Local Government Area.

The victims, mostly residents of Mairua, Kanen-haki, and Yar Dabaru communities, had been in captivity for weeks before regaining freedom on Wednesday. They were handed over to local council officials without any ransom paid.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the development on his X handle, said the release was part of ongoing dialogue between the bandit leader and community stakeholders.

Local authorities described the development as a major step towards reducing violent attacks in Faskari and other troubled areas, stressing that reconciliation and dialogue remain vital to achieving lasting peace in the North-West.

Community leaders, while welcoming the gesture, appealed to Garwa to persuade other armed groups still carrying out attacks to embrace the peace initiative.

Residents expressed relief over the safe return of their loved ones but urged government to strengthen security presence to ensure the gains of the peace process are sustained
