OpEd- Of white soup, red soup, and Kwara politics
By Titilope Anifowoshe
Politics in Kwara is like the classic culinary debate between white soup and red soup. Both are distinct, yet vital, flavors in our cultural identity. But here we are, stirring a pot of confusion over why Kwara North should get its turn to govern. Isn’t it glaringly obvious that balance in leadership is as essential as seasoning in soup?
Let me break it down: since 1999, Kwara Central has served us its political delicacy for 20 years (by 2027), and Kwara South, for 8 years. Yet Kwara North, despite being a vital ingredient in our collective dish, hasn’t had a chance to showcase its recipe. Isn’t it only fair to give them the spoon? Or are we suggesting that the stew is only complete without them?
Some Kwarans, in their sudden epiphany, now question why the North is agitating for what has long been overdue. But let us be wise here; 2023 wasn’t exactly the best time for such agitation. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq was busy laying a strong foundation of infrastructural growth. It made sense to let him finish what he started before shifting focus. But come 2027, ah ahn, why should the North wait any longer?
When it comes to competence, Kwara North is no underdog. Their ranks boast intelligent, capable, and ready leaders who may not be flashy or flamboyant with billboards and broadcasts, but are every bit deserving of the mantle of leadership. True equity in governance is not about who shouts the loudest; it is about giving every region a fair share of the pie.
Ignoring Kwara North’s aspirations would be a costly mistake. Nigeria’s history is littered with conflicts born out of marginalization and inequality. God forbid our beloved Kwara state join that list. Kwara is one family, and just as every spice in a pot of soup has its role, so should every region in leadership.
Now, on a personal note; call me partial, but I am a red-soup kind of person. There is just something about the fiery spice and drama it brings, just like Kwara politics! But no matter your taste, let us agree that every flavor deserves its chance to shine.
**PS- Igbonla is the only city in Kwara that’s witnessing snowfall. If you haven’t visited, you are missing out.
Happy holidays, Kwarans!
Let’s cook up a better future together.
