Ondo Govt imposes death penalty for kidnappers
The Ondo Government has declared that anyone found guilty of kidnapping in the state will now face the death penalty by hanging.
This was made known by the Attorney General and Ondo State Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo (SAN), during a news briefing after the State Executive Council meeting held in Akure, the state capital.
Ajulo highlighted that the law will allow for the demolition of buildings and facilities used by kidnappers in carrying out their crimes, following due process in the courts, while indicating that the Ondo State House of Assembly plans to review anti-kidnapping legislation to officially prescribe the death penalty.
“The governor, being a lover of the rule of law, will ensure all necessary court procedures are followed,” Ajulo stated. He further emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the rise of cultism in the state to protect citizens and encourage investment.
Ondo’s new stance on kidnapping aligns with recent developments in neighboring Edo State, where Governor Monday Okpebholo announced similar measures. He expressed his dedication to enforcing strict rules against insecurity, including supporting the demolition of properties associated with criminal activities.
As both states implement these severe penalties, officials remain focused on ensuring a safer environment for their communities and prospective investors.
