‘Olayinka withdraws since 2018/2019 session’: KWASU denies studentship of man killed by police
The management of the Kwara State University, Malete (KWASU), has disclosed that 27-year-old Aiyeyemi Sulaimon Olayinka, who was allegedly killed by the police at the Tanke area of Ilorin, the state capital, was not a student of the institution.
According to a statement by the Acting Director of University Relations, Dr Saeedat Aliyu, the records showed that the victim, Olayinka, voluntarily withdrew from the University’s Department of Statistics since the 2018/2019 session at the 200 level.
The Informant247 had earlier reported how the Kwara State Police Command confirmed the arrest of several officers in connection with the alleged killing of Olayinka. This development came barely three weeks after the state command dismissed and prosecuted three police officers over the alleged murder of a Kwara Polytechnic student, Quoyum Abdulyekeen.
The state’s police spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, while confirming the incident, said that the police were already aware and had taken action.
Ejire-Adeyemi said in a brief statement issued on Friday, “The Kwara State Police Command is aware of this unfortunate incident, which led to the sudden death of Suleiman Olayinka (M), 27 years old.
“A complaint of cheating and criminal breach of trust was reported against the deceased. Police detectives were immediately assigned to investigate the case.
“Meanwhile, the officers involved in the incident have been identified, arrested, and detained for further investigation regarding the death of the suspect.
“Further updates will be provided promptly as investigations unfold.”
However, the university spokesperson, in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP and monitored by our correspondent on Tuesday, said, “Records in the University show that Aiyeyemi Sulaimon Olayinka had voluntarily withdrawn from the department of Statistics of the institution since the 2018/2019 session when he was in 200 level.
“The Management of Kwara State University strongly sympathises with the family of the deceased and pray that God gives the family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
Background of the story
One Suleiman Olayinka was reported killed by the police officers on duty on Tuesday last week at around 2:00 pm in the Tanke area of Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The sources said the incident occurred when the victim got off a motorcycle and was approached by three officers, who then dragged him to the ground.
Another witness said that the deceased had come to collect N1,000, which he had already transferred to a point-of-sale operator to settle the fare for the Okada rider who brought him.
“I was with him. As soon as he got the money from a PoS operator, the officers came out of a tricycle and dragged him to the ground. The victim kept asking what offence he had committed, but they didn’t let him speak.
He pleaded with the officers, informing them that he was asthmatic, but they ignored his pleas,” the source said.
