Okupe may remain ex-convict for rest of his life, unless… — Ubani

Monday Ubani, the chairman of Public Section Interest and Development, has revealed that the former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, risks being called an ex-convict for the rest of his life if he does not appeal the judgement which convicted him of money laundering.

The Informant247 recalls that the DG was convicted by Federal High Court sitting in Abuja over money laundering.

He bagged two and a half years imprisonment, but he decided to make a payment of a fine of N13 million.

While granting television interview, Ubani said, “He was found guilty of 26 counts But the judge was magnanimous in giving an option of a fine of N500,000 per count. If you multiple that by 26, it will give you N13m.

“He paid the money and walked away, so he would not be taken to a correctional. it is a conviction that has an option of fine but still he is an ex-convict.

“If he feels that he was wrongly convicted, he should go for an appeal. He has an apellete option up to Supreme Court level on this matter but if he leaves it that way, he carries the burden of ex-convict to the rest of his life.”

Ubani added that if Okupe succeed in the apellete courts, he would be refunded the N13m fine.

The Informant247 earlier reported that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, has said that the conviction of Doyin Okupe, the Director General of his campaign organisation would not distract him from aspiring to be the country’s president.

Meanwhile, Doyin Okupe has resigned his appointment as the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council.

He made this revelation in a statement posted on his Twitter page, Tuesday.
