NYSC punishes Edo corps members with 90-Day service extension for protesting unpaid allowance
In a controversial move, the Edo chapter of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the service of certain corps members by 90 days without pay, following their protest over an unpaid allowance of N77,000. The extension, sanctioned by state coordinator Frances Ben-Ushie, replaces their anticipated discharge certificates with a notice of extended service.
Originally slated to complete their service year on March 17, 2025, the affected corps members now face additional time without compensation. This punitive measure has ignited a wave of criticism on social media, where many users see the punishment as excessive compared to the corps members’ actions.
Among the critics is Omoyele Sowore, a presidential candidate from the African Action Congress (AAC), who condemned the NYSC’s decision as “unacceptable.” He stated, “Instead of addressing the non-payment, they resort to oppression. This is exploitation, not service to the nation!”
While some social media users have criticized the corps members for their protest, suggesting they deserved a reprimand, others argue that the sanction is unjustifiable.
As of this report, Caroline Embu, the NYSC spokesperson, has not provided any official comment regarding the situation.
