NiMet workers’ Strike: Keyamo engages executives as Air Peace suspends flights

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, is currently holding a closed-door meeting with executives of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) amidst a nationwide strike initiated by the agency’s employees. The strike began on Wednesday, driven by unresolved welfare issues.

Tunde Moshood, the minister’s special adviser on media and communications, shared the update through a post on X, stating, “The Hon. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, is in a closed-door meeting with the executives of striking NiMet workers. Details will be released soon.”

The NiMet employees are protesting several critical issues, including the agency’s refusal to negotiate or enact agreed financial allowances, unresolved entitlements, and outstanding payments from the 2019 minimum wage. Workers have accused management of withholding vital documents and neglecting essential training programs in favor of executive retreats.

In light of the strike, Air Peace announced the suspension of all flight operations due to the lack of QNH (hazardous weather) reports necessary for safe landings. The airline stated that the disruption of services is a direct result of the ongoing strike, underscoring the ongoing impact of the labor action on air travel across the country. Further details regarding the situation are expected to emerge soon.
