NiMET workers call off nationwide stike After FG’s Intervention, flight operations resume
Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) have called off their strike following intervention from the Federal Government. The strike, which began on Thursday, caused significant delays and disruptions to flight operations across the country, as employees voiced their concerns over poor working conditions.
Following a meeting with Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in Abuja, the workers decided to resume their duties. Key issues at the center of the strike included the non-implementation of the new national minimum wage, neglect of certain staff regarding past allowances, and a lack of essential training programs.
The productive discussions involved various stakeholders, including the Director General of NiMET, officials from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and representatives from key labor unions such as the National Union of Air Transport Employees and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations.
As a result of the strike, many passengers were left stranded at major airports, including Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Amidst the turmoil, Air Peace took precautionary measures by halting all its flights due to safety concerns arising from the ongoing strike. Chief Executive Officer Allen Onyema emphasized that passenger safety was paramount, instructing the cancellation of all flights until the situation was resolved.
With the strike now resolved, normal flight operations are expected to resume, providing relief to travelers and ensuring improved safety and service in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
