NiMet warns as thunderstorms, dust haze expected across Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning that thunderstorms and hazy weather will affect several regions of the country between Sunday and Tuesday.
In a weather update released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet highlighted that moderate dust haze is expected in states including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa.
The agency also indicated that both Adamawa and Taraba States may experience isolated thunderstorms during this forecast period.
In the North-Central region, NiMet forecasts partly cloudy skies in the morning, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms later in the day across areas such as the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States.
In the southern states, morning thunderstorms are expected in Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, with an increase in thunderstorms anticipated in other southern regions throughout the day.
On Monday, NiMet predicts mostly sunny conditions in the northern region, although some storms may develop in Taraba and Adamawa during the morning. Thunderstorms could extend to parts of Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe later that day.
In the North-Central region on Monday, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue States, with more storms likely in the afternoon and evening.
The South is forecasted to experience morning thunderstorms in Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo, followed by increased rainfall later in the day.
By Tuesday, NiMet projects sunny weather with some clouds in the North, along with morning thunderstorms in Adamawa and Taraba States. Thunderstorms may also impact parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba later in the day.
In the North-Central area, mornings are expected to be partly cloudy, but thunderstorms could arise in the afternoon and evening in the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger States.
The southern region may see early morning thunderstorms again in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa, with further thunderstorms anticipated later.
NiMet has advised the public to exercise caution, particularly because strong winds may precede rain in areas experiencing thunderstorms. The agency also cautioned residents in the North to be mindful of dust particles in the air. Additionally, airline operators are recommended to stay updated with NiMet for safe flight planning.
