Nigerians again thrown into total blackout as fresh collapse hits power grid, second in 24 hours

Barely 24 hours after the collapse of the national grid, Nigerians have yet again been thrown into darkness as Nigeria’s power grid collapsed after its previous failure.

According to reports, the collapse, which occurred around 9:17 am on Tuesday, had plunged many parts of the country into total blackout.

Confirming the system collapse, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), in a post via X, said: “Dear Valued Customer, Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 09:17hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.

“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy grid restoration. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored.”

This is the second grid collapse in less than 24 hours.

The Informant247 had earlier reported how the national grid, on Monday, collapsed for the fifth time in 2024.

According to a post on the Independent Service Operator (ISO) website, an independent arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) that monitors the transfer of electricity on the power grid, the electricity transmission on the grid dropped to 0.00 megawatt by 7 pm, meaning no electricity was transmitted from electricity generation stations to the 11 electricity distribution companies in the country.

The drop was from 3,566 megawatts around 6 pm.

Confirming the collapse on the X handle, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) said the incident occurred around 6:48 pm.

The message signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, noted: “We regret to inform you that the current power outage currently being experienced in our franchise is due to a system disturbance
which occurred at 06:48 pm today, 14th October 2024.

“This has resulted in our inability to distribute electricity to our esteemed customers. We are appealing to our valued customers to kindly bear with us as we monitor the situation for the soonest restoration.”

He urged customers to safeguard electricity infrastructure from vandals’ activities during this time.
