Nigerian lawmakers seek 6-year single term for president, governors

Some lawmakers in the House of Representatives are pushing for changes to the Nigerian constitution to extend the presidential term to six years.

If the proposed alteration to the 1999 Constitution is approved, according to a Punch Newspapers report, governors would also see their terms reduced from eight to six years, aligning with the potential presidential change.

The group of lawmakers advocating for this amendment argues that implementing a six-year term for both the President and governors would facilitate a rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Representing the group, Ikenga Ugochinyere, member for Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency in Imo State, stated on Monday in Abuja that this move aims to enhance government efficiency, reduce spending, and promote national stability through a single six-year term for the President and governors.
