NDLEA calls for drug integrity tests for corps members, couples to combat substance abuse
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced its intention to implement drug integrity tests for youth corps members and engaged couples, aiming to tackle the issue of substance abuse and promote early intervention.
Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, outlined the initiative as a proactive measure rather than a punitive action, while highlighting that individuals testing positive can receive treatment before their condition deteriorates, facilitating recovery from drug dependence and related health concerns.
Speaking to Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Marwa congratulated him on his appointment, emphasizing the NYSC’s role as a vital component of national cohesion. He expressed urgency regarding the ongoing drug crisis, noting that approximately one in seven Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 uses drugs.
Marwa urged collaboration with the NYSC to effectively reduce the demand for drugs among the youth, advocating for the drug integrity tests as a key strategy. He praised the introduction of War Against Drug Abuse clubs in NYSC camps and stressed the need for comprehensive measures that include counseling and rehabilitation.
Additionally, he proposed that both partners intending to marry should present drug-free certificates, underscoring the significance of early detection of drug use to prevent the escalation into addiction and associated mental health challenges. Marwa concluded by reiterating the importance of these collaborative efforts in promoting safer communities and healthier futures for Nigerian youth.
