NAF launches airstrikes on illegal crude oil refining sites, boats in Rivers
In a bold move to curb the illegal activities of oil thieves and criminal elements, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has conducted airstrikes on three illegal crude oil refining sites and local boats used in transporting stolen oil products in Rivers State.
The operation took place in two different local government areas as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain security and stability within the region.
According to reports, NAF helicopters arrived at the sites of the alleged illegal activities on Friday.
The helicopters targeted the camps and reservoirs believed to contain stolen Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), resulting in significant fires that engulfed the surrounding mangroves.
A resident from Akuku-Toru Local Government Area (LGA), known as Biobele, expressed concern that casualties might have occurred due to the airstrikes, although no official reports of deaths have been received by the community.
He remarked that the perpetrators of the illegal activities were possibly present during the operation, implying that casualties may have been a consequence.
NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, provided insight into the operation.
He disclosed that the airstrikes were carried out by the air component of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), which is aimed at countering the activities of terrorists, militants, and criminal elements that threaten the peace and security of the nation.
Gabkwet’s statement highlighted the locations targeted by the airstrikes, including Cawthorne Channels, Bille, and Gogokori in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The sites were identified as illegal refining areas and subsequently attacked and destroyed.
Notably, a Cotonou boat carrying illicitly refined products was engaged and destroyed in Gogokori.
The NAF’s spokesperson further mentioned that similar airstrikes were executed in the Idama area of Akuku Toru LGA and Omoma in Degema LGA, both of which were identified based on intelligence indicating refining activities.
In addition to these operations, Gabkwet pointed out that NAF operatives also conducted strikes on militant and pirate camps in Cross River State on the same day.
This action resulted in the liberation of numerous captives who were held at these criminal hideouts.
The NAF’s decisive actions underline their commitment to maintaining law and order within the region, sending a strong message to those engaging in illegal activities that the authorities are resolute in their efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
