Minimum wage to be reviewed in two years, says FG

The federal government on Thursday announced that the just approved minimum wage would be reviewed on a two-year interval instead of five years.

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, who made this known in Abia State, said the minimum review timeline is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to his promise to Nigerian workers by ensuring the minimum wage was reviewed after three years.

“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever.

“It used to be about five years, but now, in three years’ time, which is less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” Onyejeocha said.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu had last year approved a N70,000 minimum wage, with a promise to review it every three years.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s rising inflation, standing at 34.60 per cent in November 2024, had impacted the minimum wage increase.
