Mechanic in court for alleged attempt to steal vehicle
Mudasir Alhassan, a mechanic, on Friday appeared in Abuja Court, for allegedly making attempt to steal a car which was parked in the mosque.
Alhassan has been charged by the police with joint act and attempt to carry out an offence of theft.
Charity Nwosu, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, informed the court that on October 27, around 11:30 p.m.
He said the complainant, Ahmed Lawal residing at Abeokuta, brought the matter to the awareness of the Utako Police Station.
Nwosu made an allegation that the defendant and one Adama, collaborated effort to carry out the crime by using a master key to open the car of the complainant which was parked at Jabi mosque.
She informed the court that the defendant was arrested in the car with the master key he has with him, as they were trying to steal the car.
He narrated that the accomplice escaped being arrested.
The prosecution council informed the court that during the investigation of the police, the defendants could not make an explanation or defence for the actions.
The prosecution council also revealed that the offence was in violation of the sections 79 and 95 of the penal code law.
When the matter was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Mr K. Nwafor, who’s the Defence Counsel, made an application for bail for his client.
The Defence Counsel made the application referencing sections 36 of the 1999 constitution.
He also made application citing sections 158 of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
He also made a promise that the defendants will not abuse bail if granted.
The prosecution counsel, however, did not stand against the bail application which was made by the defense counsel.
Malam Muhammed Wakili, who presided over the matter, granted the defendant a bail in the sum of N100, 000 plus one surety each in like sum.
Wakili directed that the surety must make provision for a BVN print out, new passport photograph and a valid means of national identification card, which must be subjected to verification by the registrar of the court.
The judge has adjourned the case until January 19, 2023 for hearing.
