Many persons injured, as gas explosion razes shops, houses in Jigawa

Scores have sustained various degrees of injuries in a gas explosion in Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

A resident told newsmen that the incident happened Monday night when officers of customs who were on border patrol reportedly shot at a vehicle.

He revealed that the tanker caught fire and instantly started burning houses and shops in the affected area.

The spokesperson of the NSCDC, in Jigawa State, CSC Adamu Shehu has confirmed the incident.

He revealed that the incident occurred yesterday night in Babura LGA yesterday at about 9:00pm when Iveco Van laden with filled gas cylinders exploded.

Adamu confirmed that many persons sustained severe injuries, and houses and shops were burnt down as a result of the incident.

He said the injured victims have been hospitalized at General Hospital, Babura.

The NSCDC spokesman said the circumstances which led to the explosion of the gas were not yet ascertained.

He said firefighters were mobilized from Hadejia LGA to extinguish the fire.
