Man in court over alleged tricycle theft

Abubakar Haruna, 36, was charged in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for allegedly stealing a tricycle worth N850,000. Haruna, of no permanent address, is charged with theft and conspiracy on two counts.

According to the prosecution, Insp Chidi Leo, the defendant and two others who are still at large committed the crimes on Feb. 2 at 6:00 a.m. on Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna.

Leo testified in court that the defendant stole a tricycle worth N850, 000 from the plaintiff, Mansir Babanle.

He claimed that the defendant was apprehended with the tricycle in Badarawa, Kaduna, while attempting to sell it. He said that the offences violated articles 57 and 217 of the Kaduna Penal Code of 2017.

The defendant, on the other hand, pled not guilty to the accusation. Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in the same amount.

He stated that the sureties must live within the jurisdiction of the court and be gainfully employed. Emmanuel further stated that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means and provide the court with four current passport photographs.

He further stated that the sureties must provide proof of tax payment to the Kaduna State government. The matter was deferred until March 10 for a hearing, according to Emmanuel.
