Labor Union disrupts government operations, shut down facilities as ‘warning strike’ begins in Kano

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kano State chapter has actively participated in the nationwide warning strike, leading to the temporary closure of government offices and various facilities in the state.

Reports indicate that the labor union initiated enforcement measures as early as 5 a.m. on Tuesday, focusing on ensuring the strike’s impact.

Ado Riruwai, the State Vice Chairman of the union who also chairs Private Sector Unions in the state, led the enforcement efforts. He confirmed that all government offices in the state were temporarily shut down during the strike.

Riruwai further noted that essential sectors like the power industry and banks were also affected by the strike action. Additionally, they were heading to the airport to prevent any flights from taking off.

“We have shut down all power sectors, banks are not operating. We heard a flight took off this morning from the airport; we are heading down there to ensure no flight takes off,” Riruwai stated.

Among the facilities affected by the strike was the Kano Electric Distribution Company (KEDCO) head office.

The NLC had previously announced its intention to carry out a two-day warning strike to protest the significant hardships and increased poverty resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies, which has been affecting people nationwide.
