KWEPA warns horse owners against allowing animals to roam freely in Ilorin

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning to horse owners in Ilorin, cautioning them against allowing their animals to roam unsupervised on major roads within the metropolis.

General Manager of the agency, Hon. Jide Aina, gave the warning on Friday following complaints about stray horses posing safety risks to residents and road users. He described the situation as a “serious public hazard” capable of causing accidents, including fatal ones.

“This recurring issue is not only dangerous but entirely unacceptable,” Aina stated. “Any horse found roaming the streets without proper supervision will be seized, and the owner will be held accountable in accordance with the Environmental Health Laws of Kwara State.”

He emphasized that negligence by horse owners endangers public safety and violates existing environmental regulations. Such acts, he warned, are punishable under the law.

KWEPA reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward environmental violations and called on all horse owners to ensure their animals are properly confined and supervised at all times.

“This is a shared responsibility,” Aina added. “Safeguarding lives and ensuring orderliness on our roads must never be compromised.”

The agency also urged residents to report cases of stray horses or other environmental threats, assuring that enforcement operations will be intensified to eliminate such dangers.

According to KWEPA, the measure is part of ongoing efforts to protect the environment, promote public safety, and maintain a sustainable and healthy living environment across Kwara State.
