Kwara secures approval to train graduate intern nurses
The Kwara State government has secured the approval of the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to commence the training of graduate intern nurses for the first time in the state’s history.
Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board, announced this today during a management meeting. He confirmed that Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin, and General Hospital, Offa, will serve as the pioneer institutions for this internship program.
“This is yet another great step in the right direction by the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq,” Dr. Malik stated, emphasizing the importance of establishing a solid academic foundation in the health sector, addressing manpower gaps, and sustaining healthcare improvements. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to the health of Kwara residents as a cardinal objective.
Dr. Malik acknowledged the trust placed in them by the regulatory body and pledged to uphold all necessary standards that led to this approval. He also noted that a similar accreditation was recently obtained from the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) for training graduate pharmacist interns.
He called on all stakeholders within the health sector to collaborate in ensuring that healthcare services are delivered professionally to the people of Kwara.
With this development, Kwara State joins the ranks of states in the country that train intern pharmacists and nurses. The Hospital Management Board is also working towards obtaining accreditation for training Medical Laboratory Scientists in the state.
Mrs. Oyewole Risikat, the Director of Nursing Services, encouraged prospective graduate nurses to seize this opportunity, highlighting the resources committed to healthcare training programs in Kwara to enable them to compete globally.
Dr. Femi Joseph, the Director of Medical Services and Training, commended the Kwara State government and praised Dr. Abdulraheem Malik for his exemplary leadership in the agency.
