Kwara govt urges fowl sellers to prioritise fair pricing, hygiene in poultry market
The fowl sellers in Kwara state have been urged to prioritise fair prices and maintain high levels of hygiene in their poultry markets to safeguard residents’ health.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Oloruntoyosi Thomas, stated this during the annual prayer session of the Fowl Sellers Association of Nigeria (Kwara State Chapter) at the Baboko Market in Ilorin.
The Commissioner commended the association for maintaining order despite economic challenges while appealing to them to keep the prices of poultry affordable for all, asserting that fowl sellers play a vital role in Kwara’s economy, dealing in chickens, ducks, guinea fowls, doves, and other rare birds.
Mrs Thomas also emphasised the importance of market hygiene, advising sellers to maintain strict sanitary standards to prevent bird flu and other avian diseases. She encouraged them to ensure timely vaccination of their birds to safeguard public health and food quality.

The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr Olugbon Salman Abdullateef, Iya Loja of Kwara State, Alhaja Muibat Olumo, Alhaja Afusat Abdullahi, Iya Egbe Aladie of Kwara State, and market leaders from across Ilorin.
