Kwara govt unveils transportation improvement plan for growth development

The Kwara State Government has unveiled its plans to enhance the ongoing transportation system, emphasizing the development of a reliable road network and urbanization to support the growth of its citizens.

This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Lafia Aliyu Korasabi, during the first quarter 2025 Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Ministry of Finance conference room in Ilorin today.

In his address, Hon. Korasabi commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his progressive vision in advancing transportation initiatives, especially through the implementation of Smart City projects and improvements in road infrastructure.

He noted that the integration of setbacks, walkways, traffic lights, and road signage not only enhances the visual appeal of the roads but also ensures the safety and well-being of commuters.

The Commissioner also highlighted the dedication of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) and the Vehicles Inspection Office (VIO) in their commitment to enforcing traffic laws, saying these bodies are actively working to combat issues related to indiscriminate parking and roadside garages, which are essential for preventing accidents and ensuring smoother traffic flow.

“Since the establishment of the Ministry of Transportation, KWARTMA has intensified its enforcement of policies such as ‘No Parking,’ ‘No Waiting,’ and ‘No Trading’ on walkways to discourage unauthorized use and safeguard roadways from encroachment,” emphasized Hon. Korasabi.

He also mentioned the Ministry’s efforts to mediate among transport unions, promoting unity and peace within the sector.

Additionally, the Ministry is initiating the creation of a technologically advanced vehicle inspection system through the Kwara State Automated Vehicle Inspection Unit (KWAVIS), the system, which is projected to enhance efficiency and transparency within the transportation sector while relieving stress from traditional vehicle inspection processes.

Hon. Korasabi assured the media and public alike that the Ministry is committed to ensuring the security of citizens by installing intelligent automated traffic lights at strategic junctions. This initiative aims to significantly reduce traffic violations and deter the activities of non-state actors in the area.
