Kwara govt rules out cholera outbreak, confirms gastroenteritis cases

The Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has broken the silence over the rumoured cholera outbreak, saying gastroenteritis was rather confirmed, thereby alleviating concerns over a potential cholera outbreak in the state.

Dr Amina Ahmed El-lmam, the state Commissioner for Health, made this known in a press briefing at the Emergency Operation Center of the State Ministry of Health in Ilorin, the state capital.

Dr El-lmam announced that the state government had activated its outbreak response mode, involving all relevant ministries, to monitor and manage the situation, saying rapid diagnostic tests have ruled out cholera but confirmed cases of gastroenteritis, which has resulted in one casualty, while other patients are responding to treatments.

She said, “The state’s surveillance team is actively working to prevent further spread of the disease.” She added.

“The present administration has deployed all necessary equipment and qualified professionals to prevent a possible outbreak. It is, however, important for members of the public to maintain good health practices, maintain a clean environment, proper hand washing, boil water before drinking and ensure food security at all times.

The Commissioner, however, reassured the public that the situation was already under control.
