Kwara govt reaffirms commitment to tackling social vices

The Kwara State Government has once again emphasized its determination to eliminate social irresponsibility, criminal activities, gender-based violence, and juvenile misconduct to ensure the safety of all residents.

During a recent visit to various facilities including the Juvenile Remand Home, Correctional Centre, and Olorunda Psychiatric Home in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Nnafatima Imam Mariam, PhD, outlined the administration’s strategies for fostering a secure environment within the state.

Hon. Mariam communicated the Governor’s dedication to combating gender-based violence and other social vices, including street begging and criminal offenses. She pledged that the government would provide necessary support to ensure the efficient operation of correctional facilities and introduced the idea of entrepreneurship programs aimed at equipping children with skills for responsible reintegration into society upon their release.

The Commissioner commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for overseeing significant renovations of these facilities, which had fallen into disrepair prior to his tenure. She encouraged the young inmates to avoid social vices and violence, emphasizing that with determination, they can achieve their dreams.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Peter Kayode Ayanwale, also encouraged the youth to reform and contribute positively to society if granted clemency.

Leaders from the correctional homes expressed gratitude to the State Government for its ongoing support, particularly regarding facility renovations and resource provision. They further requested the introduction of digital solutions to enhance operational efficiency within the homes.

This proactive approach by the Kwara State Government signals a holistic plan to foster safety and responsibility among its youth while improving the state’s correctional infrastructure.
