Kwara govt launches livestock agribusiness program for corps members
In a significant move to empower youth and tap into the vast potential of the livestock sector, the Kwara State Government has announced the launch of a new livestock entrepreneurship program aimed specifically at training and funding aspiring young agripreneurs throughout the state.
During a recent visit to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Tsaragi District, the state’s Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, shared details of this initiative.
Accompanied by Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the Commissioner highlighted the government’s vision of transforming Kwara into a hub of livestock innovation and rural prosperity.
“This initiative is designed to turn our youths from being job seekers into job creators in the livestock business,” Mrs. Thomas stated.
She explained that the partnership with NYSC will enable participants to receive practical training in livestock production, business development, and access to finance in a structured and supportive environment.
The program is set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2025 and will be supported through a public-private partnership already secured by the state government.
The training will last for three months, after which participants will be provided with starter packs and necessary resources to establish or expand their ventures.
Notably, while the program primarily targets corps members, Hon. Thomas emphasized that it will also be accessible to other young people in the state during off-camp seasons, allowing a broader audience to benefit from the initiative.
NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Onifade Olaoluwa Joshua, welcomed the initiative and assured full support, noting that the camp is well-equipped to accommodate the training’s needs. He also urged the government to ensure safety and security around the facility.
In addition to the visit, the Commissioner sought the blessings of Etsu Tsaragi, Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi Kpotwa, and informed him about this pivotal youth empowerment project set to launch in his region.
The Kwara Youth Livestock Empowerment Programme is envisioned as a flagship initiative under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, further underscoring the administration’s commitment to fostering agricultural innovation and supporting youth-led development in the state.
