Kwara govt amplifies collaboration to tackle drug abuse, social vices

The Kwara State Government is ramping up efforts to combat drug abuse and other social vices by strengthening its collaboration with the Kwara State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Kwara State Police Command.

This initiative aims to develop swift and sustainable solutions to the rising challenges posed by drug abuse across the state.

During recent official visits to both the NDLEA and Police Command in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Mariam Nnafatima Imam, PhD, emphasized that eliminating drug abuse is essential for sustaining the peace that Kwara State is known for, adding that creating a responsible and secure environment where every resident can thrive is a central focus of the Ministry’s efforts.

Highlighting ongoing sensitization and awareness campaigns against drug abuse, Hon. Mariam stressed the necessity for enhanced enforcement and punitive measures as deterrents for offenders while reaffirming the commitment of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to ensuring safety and peace in the state.

The Commissioner urged both the NDLEA and Police Command to identify areas for strategic collaboration and submit proposals for budgetary provisions in the 2026 fiscal year, saying this joint action plan aims to address the increasing tide of social vices in Kwara State.

Hon. Mikhail Aileru Olamilekan, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Drug Abuse, Prevention and Control, acknowledged the dedication of the two agencies and reiterated the State Government’s readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to eliminate the menace.

Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his ongoing support for the police force and pledged the police’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry while also commending the formation of a joint task force incorporating police and other stakeholders to effectively manage drug abuse and related issues.

Also speaking, Mrs. Fatima Popoola, Commander of the NDLEA, Kwara Command, welcomed the collaborative efforts and commended the Commissioner for her dedication to fostering a safer Kwara.

She advocated for evidence-based practices in the fight against drug abuse and called for the proper documentation of victims’ histories and treatments for future reference.
