Kwara farmers urged to prepare for thunderstorms amid planting season
The Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has alerted farmers in the state to be prepared for a series of thunderstorms forecasted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which are expected across various parts of the state from Tuesday to Thursday, particularly during the afternoon and evening.
According to a statement by the Press Secretary of the Ministry, Ashaolu Omotola, farmers are advised to take necessary precautions, as strong winds may precede the rains, adding that they should limit activities in open fields during lightning storms and ensure that electrical appliances are disconnected when not in use.
The Ministry also emphasizes the need for caution around trees and unstable structures during heavy rainfall.
In connection with this weather update, the Ministry reminds farmers that Kwara is now officially entering its planting season, which typically starts in the first or second week of May, according to NiMet’s earlier seasonal climate predictions. With the current rainfall patterns aligning with these forecasts, it presents a favorable opportunity for farmers to begin planting activities.
To enhance productivity, farmers are urged to adopt climate-smart practices such as timely land preparation, the use of improved seed varieties, appropriate spacing, and efficient water management, adding that these measures will help mitigate risks associated with unpredictable weather and ultimately improve yields.
The statement, however, said the state government remained dedicated to supporting farmers by providing timely advisories and on-field extension services.
