Kwara FA aims to secure AFCON 2025 matches for Ilorin stadium

Alh. Abdullahi Musa Idris, also known as Thuraya, Chairman of the Kwara State Football Association (FA), has announced an ambitious effort to secure Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin as one of the venues for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025.

Thuraya shared this exciting news during a recent media update on the FA’s activities and football administration in Kwara State.

He revealed that they have made a strong case to the state government, through the Kwara Sports Commission (KSC), for support when the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) committee responsible for selecting suitable stadiums for the tournament visits.

Nigeria and Benin Republic have jointly submitted a bid to host AFCON 2025 after Guinea withdrew due to financial issues.

Their main competition for the bid is Morocco, known for its modern facilities and sports development plans. Thuraya remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances, emphasizing the country’s strategic importance in African football.

“FIFA and CAF prioritize football development, and I believe that if Kwara is considered, with our vibrant football culture, warm hospitality, and serene environment, Nigeria has a strong chance,” stated the FA Chairman.

Thuraya highlighted Kwara’s historical significance in African football, mentioning renowned figures like Rashidi Yekini, Taiwo Awoniyi, Seyi Olofinjana, Obinna Nsofor, and others who have ties to the state.

He also pointed out the successful public-private partnership (PPP) model employed by Kwara under Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrazak, which transformed the Kwara Stadium into one of the country’s premier grass football pitches.

The stadium improvements, overseen by AU Mustapha, SAN, and the state FA, covered the pitch and stadium facilities, such as dressing rooms, media studios, toilets, and bathrooms.

To support the state government’s bid to host AFCON matches and enhance soccer administration, the FA established a Special Organizing Committee (SOC).

The SOC will play a crucial role in overseeing various committees and subcommittees.

Thuraya emphasized the need for a lean, functional committee and revealed their communication with the state government to assist the NFF committee in evaluating Kwara Stadium.

The SOC, led by Bashorun Kayode Bankole, includes members such as Alh Bolaji Umar, Alh Sulaiman Fowomola, Engnr. Idris Jibril Etsu, Mall. Ademola Kiyesola, Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka, Mall. Tunde Kazeem, Prince Oladimeji Ladi-Thompson, and Alh. Ahmed Abdullahi.
