Kwara declares war on street begging, social vices

The Kwara State Government has taken a strong stance against street begging and various social vices in Ilorin, firmly warning that individuals involved in these activities will face legal consequences.

During a recent visit to the Committee on Business, Innovation, Industry, Women Affairs, and Social Development at the Kwara State House of Assembly, the Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nna Fatima Imam, stated, “Street begging poses significant security risks and constitutes an environmental nuisance. We must act now to protect our community and our children from these dangers.”

Hajia Imam announced that awareness campaigns would be launched to inform the public about the penalties for engaging in begging and related activities.

She added, “We will be airing jingles in English, Yoruba, and Hausa across the three Senatorial Districts to ensure maximum reach and impact.”

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of collaboration with stakeholders to rid the streets of miscreants, highlighting the campaign’s dual aim: to enhance community safety and to safeguard children from abuse.

Hon. Olushola Odetundun, Chairman of the Committee, commended the Ministry’s proactive measures, saying, “If we do not address street begging immediately, it could escalate into a major security challenge. It is crucial that we support the Ministry in communicating any challenges they face to the House of Assembly.”
