Kwara APC chairman calls for open congresses, says all members free to contest
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, has called for an all-inclusive and transparent party congress process, insisting that every member interested in contesting must be allowed to do so without hindrance.
Fagbemi made the call during a meeting of the state executive committee, alongside party chairmen and secretaries from the 16 local government areas, convened to reflect on the outgoing executives’ tenure and prepare for the forthcoming ward, local government and state congresses.
Addressing the gathering, Fagbemi commended party leaders at all levels for what he described as a strong working relationship anchored on unity and progress, despite inevitable disagreements.
“Politics is about interests, and it is normal to have varied interests,” he said, noting that differences of opinion should not undermine party cohesion.
With the tenure of the current executives nearing its end, the APC chairman expressed gratitude to members for their cooperation and achievements, particularly the party’s record of winning all recent elections in the state.
“Some of us might never have met without this executive bond. I appreciate everyone and apologize on behalf of all where we might have wronged each other. I seek forgiveness,” Fagbemi said. “Some of us might not return after the congresses, but we must part on good terms.”
He stressed that the upcoming congresses should serve as a test of character, integrity and adherence to party rules, adding that the leadership has consistently operated within the provisions of the party’s constitution.
Reaffirming the congress timetable — ward congresses on February 18, local government congresses on February 21, and the state congress on March 4, ahead of the national convention — Fagbemi underscored the need for fairness and openness.
“Everyone who desires to contest should be allowed to do so,” he said, emphasizing that all necessary information must be made available to interested members, without the formation of caucuses or exclusion of stakeholders.
He further called on party leaders to ensure that all stakeholders are carried along in the process, describing inclusiveness as key to sustaining party unity.
While congratulating party executives at all levels, Fagbemi paid special tribute to local government executives, whom he described as the backbone of the party due to their closeness to the grassroots, despite what he termed “unwarranted criticisms”.
He also urged party leaders to intensify mobilization efforts, noting that the APC membership e-registration exercise would soon come to an end.
