Insecurity: Borno Gov announces closure of 10,000-capacity Muna IDP camp after 10 years
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, announced today that the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp will be closed within the next two weeks.
Muna IDP camp, established nearly 10 years ago, is one of the largest camps housing displaced persons at the height of the humanitarian crisis in the state.
This decision was revealed during an early morning visit to the camp, where he assured residents that they would receive support to enhance their livelihoods.
“The Muna IDP camp has been a vital shelter for many over the past decade, and we are committed to improving their living conditions as we transition to closing the camp,” Governor Zulum stated.
In June 2024, the governor successfully resettled 75 percent of the IDPs from Muna to safer regions in six local government areas, including Bama, Gwoza, Jere, Konduga, Kukawa, and Ngala. However, a number of IDPs from Mafa and Dikwa, where security remains a concern, are still residing in the camp.
IDPs from these regions have expressed their desire to return home, urging the governor to consider their plea for repatriation as soon as it is safe. “We appeal to the government to allow us to return to our ancestral homes if the security situation permits,” one IDP remarked.
