IGP arrives in Benue, deploys additional tactical teams to curb killings
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, arrived in Benue State on Monday in response to a series of violent attacks that occurred last Friday, leading to numerous deaths and the displacement of hundreds.
Benue has been under siege from suspected herdsmen for an extended period, with violent clashes often stemming from long-standing conflicts over land between local farmers and nomadic cattle herders. The recent surge in violence has resulted in over 160 confirmed deaths in a matter of weeks, alarming residents and officials alike.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed his distress over the situation and has directed security chiefs to implement his call for urgent measures to restore peace in the region.
“The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing. We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is now enough,” President Tinubu stated. He further emphasized, “I have directed the security agencies to act decisively and arrest perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides of the conflict and prosecute them.”
