Ibadan funfair stampede: Oyo Police detain principal, invite Ooni’s ex-wife, Oriyomi Hamzat

Following a tragic incident that claimed the lives of children at funfair, the operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have detained the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Mr Abdullahi Fasasi.

Vanguard learnt that Fasasi was invited by the police on Wednesday night and has been detained since then in connection with the stampede that occurred at the school.

A relative to the principal who pleaded anonymity narrated that Fasasi was invited by the police around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, honoured the invitation and was detained upon arrival.

He added that Fasasi is being held at the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, in the Iyaganku area.

“The principal of the school, Mr Abdullahi Fasasi, has been detained by the police. He was invited around 4:00 p.m. yesterday, and he honoured the invitation.”

“He has been detained since then. He has not been released,” he said.

Meanwhile, information from the state police headquarters revealed that Naomi Silekunola, an estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and popular Ibadan-based radio owner Oriyomi Hamzat, have been invited for questioning by the police.

However, the duo are yet to appear before the police as of the time of filing this report, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, saying, “We are yet to receive them for questioning. Members of the public will be comprehensively briefed as events unfold,” he said.

It would be recalled that scores of children lost their lives following the stampede during a children’s carnival organised by Silekunola, held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday.
