Ibadan explosion: updates on casualties, blames, arrest, investigations

A devastating explosion caused by illegally stored mining explosives rocked the Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, resulting in a tragic death toll of five (5) and leaving 77 others injured as at the time of filing this report.

The incident, which occurred around 7:45 p.m., also led to the destruction of more than 30 buildings, including houses, shops, and a mosque, and left a significant crater on the ground.

Illegal Mining Activities Blamed for the Tragedy

Preliminary investigations by security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices, triggering the blast.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the site, vowed to ensure justice and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and the source of the explosives.

Ongoing Rescue and Response Efforts

Rescue operations are still ongoing, with first responders and relevant agencies working tirelessly to search for those feared trapped under the rubble.

Most of the injured have been discharged, and Governor Makinde pledged to cover medical bills for those still receiving treatment and provide temporary accommodation for those affected.

Government Actions and Condemnations

The Oyo State government has deployed security agencies, including the police, DSS, army, and Amotekun Corps, to secure the area and prevent further incidents.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other agencies are collaborating to ensure a seamless execution of rescue operations.

Those Responsible For Incident Must Be Punished – President Tinubu

President Tinubu, while reacting to the devastating explosion, said that the cause of the blast being attributed to the activities of illegal miners is worrisome.

Tinubu said those responsible for the explosion that has created the conditions for the sad incident to occur must be fished out and punished.

Identity of Illegal Miners behind explosion revealed

The identity of one whose property allegedly housed the explosives that resulted in the massive explosion at Dejo Oyelese Street in Bodija has been identified.

A foreigner, Sawani Yusuf, was allegedly responsible for the explosion in Ibadan on Tuesday. This revelation came to light during the Thursday plenary session of the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Sanjo Adedoyin, the Majority Leader of the House, disclosed that the property owned by Sawani Yusuf allegedly housed the explosives, leading to the significant explosion on Dejo Oyelese Street in Bodija.

Widespread Condemnations and Solidarity

The explosion has drawn condemnation and sympathy from various quarters, including the federal government, APC, PDP, and prominent Nigerians.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Sadiya Umar Farouq expressed shock and assured the state government of federal support. The APC urged proactive measures to prevent future occurrences, while the PDP commiserated with victims and called for adequate relief.

Calls for Accountability and Safety Measures

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, urged relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly.

Celebrities, including actor Muyiwa Ademola, visited the scene to express condolences and prayers for affected residents.
